What’s Going on COSS Weekend?
This fall, we will feature Here and There of Cochineal and Amate, an exhibition on display until October 25. The exhibition is the work of local artist and Columbus Open Studio & Stage participant, Elena Osterwalder.
In her Upper Arlington studio, Osterwalder uses pre-Hispanic methods to prepare her own dyes with “cochineal” bug and colors “amate” bark paper. She combines these two highly valued elements of ancient times to make contemporary art installations. Her work also includes writings, videos and talks on the history of both elements – cochineal and amate. Her artwork has been exhibited in Columbus, Cleveland, China, and Israel, and currently one of her pieces is in a travelling exhibition in Europe. Osterwalder wishes to express her gratitude to the city of Upper Arlington in this the 100th year of UA, for the opportunity to share with the public her art and its expression of the ancient traditions of the country where she was born in Mexico.
